22.02.2017 – Meditate Matthew 8,23 – 26

“Then He got into the boat and his disciples followed him.

Suddenly a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping.

The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” .

He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.”

Jesus walks and his disciples follow Him: in this passage He gets on a boat, in other moments He will make other actions, but what is important is that the disciples follow Him. For this, you should ask yourself: do I follow the Lord in the daily activities of my life? Am I open to changes of directions or I prefer to get lazy in habits? Jesus never stops, He works incessantly and He wants to be followed day by day and hour by hour.

In everyone’s life are unleashed storms. Tribulations, sufferings, troubles are growth bread for the disciples of Jesus, but it’s a bread unwelcome by the most because contrary to the natural tastes. The boat, in this case, is also the symbol of the community of those who follow the Lord. Therefore  troubles concern every person but  also the community as a whole. Think about the behaviour of the disciples: Jesus is present but He sleeps and the disciples are overwhelmed by fear. Many christians, in every generation, are feeling alone in the trouble because Jesus is hidden to their senses and He doesn’t give signs in order to increase the faith.

The passage continues by telling us that the disciples came near to Him. They aren’t far away because the boat wasn’t big, but there was a need to get closer to Him for ask Him humbly to intervene. And a beautiful prayer borns from those anguished hearts: “Lord, save us, we are going to drown”. The disciples recognise in Jesus the Lord and the ask humbly to be saved, because they know that vain is the salvation of the man (Psalm 59,13).

Jesus is awakened and He makes two actions:

  1. The first, in order of time and importance, is to teach the disciples. Therefore He raises the question: ” why you are afraid?” And immediately He gives the answer: “men of a little faith”. Everyone should examine in himself when he is afraid, to find in himself the solution suggested by the Lord, that is the faith.
  2. The second action, and surely the most appreciated by the disciples, is to quell the storm and to bring back the calm. This is reassuring and it’s right that’s so, but it should be remembered by the believers when, later and unexpectedly, will begin a new storm. It’s correct remember the graces received in order to grow in faith.

These few lines of the Gospel should help you to meditate that faith is in the Lord Jesus Christ that saves from the torments of fear and from the distress and He makes you proceed in your earthly journey in peace, because He is always with you, every day, until the end of world. He acts without interruption, because He is the King of Heaven and earth, of every individual or community history, but His actions are for you manifest only in certain times. God is Perfect and His Times are always perfect: this is a truth worthy of faith.

Why then agonise unnecessarily? God is with you, He loves you and He saves you. Try to increase your faith so that it becomes brighter and gives light to all those who still don’t believe in the Lord Jesus.

In this time there are too many troubles between the believers for the difficult situation of the Church. Jesus said that the gates of hell shall not prevail and so it is and will be.

Remain in the Peace of the Lord, everyone doing the duty of your condition and always praying for everybody, so that God’s Will be done in history and in people.

I bless you lovingly because I’m your Mother.

Mary, Queen of Heaven and earth.
